Do you know about paper-based coated abrasives?

 Coated abrasives, also known as flexible abrasives, are products that consist of a thin layer of abrasive grain attached to a substrate. Paper, cloth, fiber , film, non-woven, foam are used as substrate for coated abrasives. The substrate also called as backing and can have varying degrees of flexibility ranging from extremely flexible (E weight cotton backings) to extremely sturdy (Z weight polyester backings).The backing gives the abrasive very specific grip and adhesion, stretch, tear resistance, tensile strength, flexibility and stability properties. These backing are used as backings for different types of abrasives: rolls, belts, discs and sheet goods. Today, I'm going to introduce you to paper-based coated abrasives.

Paper-backed abrasives (i.e. traditional sandpaper) are the most affordable abrasives. Specialized technical papers are used as substrates for coated abrasives. Paper backings come in different paper weights, designated by letters, are available for different applications. The A to C weight categories are best suited for hand sanding and for use with pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) or hook-and-loop discs, while D to E are flexible enough to be used with stroke or wide belts. These papers are polymer-reinforced to enhance drape and “hand” as well as increase durability, tear resistance, holdout and grit adhesion. Smooth, level surfaces allow for the uniform deposit of ultra-fine grits. Barrier or “Tie” and Anti-slip surface coatings are available.

 The following is a classification of paper bases named by letters.“A” This is light weights and highly flexible. The light 80-90g paper is primarily used in finishing operations where fine grits are required. “C” Weight - This medium light120-140g paper is used when some pliability and strength are required. It can be used in folded or flat areas and is ideal for cabinetwork. This backing is available in fine to medium grits. “D” Weight - This medium heavy 150-180g paper is available in medium and coarse grits. “E” Weight - This strong 200g-250g paper is used for belts, discs, rolls and very coarse sheets. “F” Weight - This 270g paper is used for narrow and wide belts, metal and crankshaft polishing rolls, and cabinet and furniture industries.

 Binic manufactures A through E weight sandpaper backing papers for the production of wet and dry flexible coated abrasives. They come in a broad range of weights, from light and flexible to thick and sturdy. For light to moderate sanding jobs on surfaces such as wood, textiles and lacquers, a paper backing is recommended as it produces a good finish with less friction and heat. Paper is ideal for flat sanding applications and usually provides the best finish for flat sanding jobs.
